Most people are able to organize their lives around a relatively predictable schedule when it comes to their work. One of the big challenges to shift work is that you're usually not on the same schedule every week. You might be working midnights as a cable cutter for a couple of days in a row and then have the evening shift next. This means it's difficult to make solid plans and keep consistent with the rest of your life. You will not always be sleeping, eating, or running errands at the same time. This can be confusing if you're not a very organized person and can have a toll on your body and mind.

Those working shift work usually have some days off during the week, which can make it easier to schedule things like doctor's appointments and bank meetings during regular business hours without missing work.
